As a self-employed person, I have a habit of working all day, every day. There is no nine to five because there is no office. I can work until three in the morning if I want to. Of course in my case, “working” for me often equals lots of sewing, writing emails and reading magazines. It’s not the worst life. The only problem here is that I am not making much money from this part of my work. Most of my living is earned working for other companies.
This week I decided to take a little break. After working for Brooks Brothers on Monday and Tuesday, I took three days off to sew, cook, bake and clean the house. It’s amazing how much fun it is to make a nice, leisurely dinner when you have the time to savor it. Often, Mr. Loveforever and I complain about how annoying it is to figure out the answer to the daily question, “what are we going to have for dinner?” after a long day of work and schlepping around the city.
But today, everything was different. I grabbed my new totebag (patchwork heart added by moi), my ipod loaded with new episodes of This American Life and took a stroll over to the vegetable market. After surveying the veggies, I decided to make butternut squash risotto with sage for dinner, a nice wintery, stick-to-your-ribs kind of meal. I picked up some wine, then headed home to cook, accompanied by a new DVD of Freaks and Geeks.
Tonight, it’s back to work for me. I have twenty eye pillows to finish by next week. Wish me luck!

oh! that sounds like such a perfectly lovely day(and a delish dinner). good luck with those eye pillows!
Wow . . . I am inspired! I only recently started down the self-employed road, and I find myself working constantly. And I agree with you, for the most part, it’s really enjoyable and doesn’t feel like work. . . except that, after about ten 16-hour days straight, I get completely wiped out. Kudos to you for creating a bit of balance!
i love this american life! but i love butternut squash risotto even more.
i love your bag! i may have to steal that idea- i have several pieced squares from my workshop with no home, and several boring tote shopping bags. hooray!!
linda-it was so easy to make. copy away!
don’t you wish blogs were like email and you could respond to each person seperately?
